Community Empowerment & Caregiver Training Initiatives
- The Strategy: To build a sustainable hearing care network, I developed a "Train-the-Trainer" public health strategy, shifting the focus from individual clinical intervention to community-wide empowerment.
- The Execution: Over three years, I led multiple initiatives integrating international frameworks (ICOPE) and national policies (LTC 2.0). This involved training community seed lecturers and equipping frontline caregivers with practical auditory skills.
- The Impact: Successfully established a quality-controlled network of community lecturers and introduced innovative, gamified auditory training methods, significantly enhancing the early detection and management of hearing loss in older adults.
Building the Foundation: Community Lecturer Training
Commissioned by the local government, this ongoing project (2022-2024) is dedicated to empowering local lecturers across diverse communities. The primary objective is to provide them with robust hearing health care courses, enabling these "seed lecturers" to disseminate crucial knowledge within their respective neighborhoods.
Beyond Teaching: A Dual-Mode Approach
My role extends far beyond planning and teaching the curriculum. I serve as a Clinical Supervisor, rigorously evaluating the lecturers during their practical internships in the communities. This dual-mode approach (Instruction + Supervision) ensures strict quality control and guarantees that accurate, standardized audiological knowledge reaches the public.
Frontline Impact: LTC 2.0 Caregiver Training
Taiwan's Long-Term Care (LTC) 2.0 policy is pivotal in preparing for a super-aged society. Recognizing that frontline caregivers are often the first to interact with seniors experiencing hearing decline, I collaborated with a rehabilitation institute to design targeted training modules.
Practical Skills for Daily Care
We specifically focused on actionable, non-medical interventions. Caregivers were trained on the basic maintenance of hearing aids, effective communication strategies (such as managing environmental noise and utilizing visual cues), and the critical role auditory health plays in preventing and delaying cognitive disability.
Innovative Approach: WHO ICOPE Workshop
The WHO Guidelines on Integrated Care for Older People (ICOPE) highlight hearing capacity as a core domain for healthy aging. To make this framework digestible for community workers, I shifted away from traditional lectures towards a gamified, interactive learning experience.
Auditory Games & Simulation
I actively participated in the design of "Auditory Memory Games" and simulated hearing-loss experiences. By transforming complex audiological concepts into engaging activities, we empowered ICOPE practitioners to better empathize with older adults and conduct more effective preliminary hearing screenings in community settings.
Ecosystem Vision: A Resilient Defense Network
By integrating grassroots community educators, frontline LTC 2.0 caregivers, and the international WHO ICOPE framework, these initiatives collectively build a robust, multi-layered hearing care ecosystem. The ultimate goal transcends basic screening—it's about proactive empowerment, ensuring older adults in Taiwan age with dignity, connection, and optimal auditory health.
